What this industry is

This chapter combines two of agriculture's most different corners: fishing and aquaculture (an estimated ₹5.0 lakh crore of GVA in FY26) and forestry and logging (₹3.6 lakh crore), together 2.7% of national GVA. Fisheries are a policy-and-export-led transformation story - inland aquaculture (carp and, on the Andhra coast, vannamei shrimp) has tripled fish production since FY05 to about 19.5 million tonnes and underpins a $7 billion shrimp-export industry shipped mostly to the United States, with GVA per worker (~₹8 lakh) the highest in agriculture. Forestry is the opposite case: growth of only 2-3% a year, dominated by fuelwood gathered by rural households (imputed at rural prices and being displaced by LPG) and minor forest produce, with industrial wood increasingly sourced from farm trees rather than actual forests, and its share of agriculture GVA has fallen sharply from about 13.5% in FY05 to 6.4% in FY26. Both industries sit almost entirely outside the listed market; the exception is the organised shrimp-feed and processing/export chain (Avanti Feeds and peers), which is the only meaningful equity exposure to either industry.
