What this industry is

Paper and paperboard, wood and panels, furniture, and printing together add about ₹1.5 lakh crore of value (0.48% of national GVA) and employ around 9 million people, more than autos and pharma combined, yet the listed part is small and cyclical: nine paper companies worth ₹0.25 lakh crore earning ₹718 crore in a trough year, plus a handful of panel and mattress makers and ITC's paperboard segment. Furniture, the largest segment by value added, is about 85% unorganised and its two best-known brands, IKEA and Godrej Interio, are both private; paper is the mature, organised end of the chain with per-capita consumption at a third of the world average and demand for writing/printing paper flat to falling as offices and education digitise, while packaging board and MDF panels are the growth pockets. Value added grew about 9% a year FY05-FY26, three points below GDP, so the industry's share of national GVA fell from 0.85% to 0.48% and of manufacturing GVA from 5.5% to 3.2%. The base case takes GVA to about ₹2.15 lakh crore by FY30 and ₹3.3 lakh crore by FY35 (roughly 9% a year), driven by packaging-board and MDF growth and slow furniture formalisation, with paper import policy (ASEAN/China duty-free access) and farm-forestry wood supply as the key swing variables.
