Road transport & logistics.
Gross value added
What this industry is
Road transport, storage and warehousing is India's largest transport industry, adding an estimated ₹8.9 lakh crore of value in FY26 (2.8% of national GVA) — more than railways, aviation, ports and shipping combined — while moving about 65% of freight tonne-kilometres and 90% of passenger trips. It is also the most fragmented large industry in the economy: roughly 90% of trucks are owned by operators with fewer than five vehicles, and the entire listed road-logistics sector's market capitalisation (~₹0.8 lakh crore) is about a fifth of Maruti Suzuki's alone. Nominal GVA has grown roughly 10% a year since FY05, driven by industrial output, construction, e-commerce (about 6 billion parcels a year) and urban passenger demand, with GST-era hub consolidation and an express-parcel boom as the two real structural shifts beneath the headline numbers. The Atlas's base case sees GVA reaching ₹13.5 lakh crore by FY30 and ₹22.5 lakh crore by FY35, as formalisation (express, 3PL and platforms) lifts the organised share of freight revenue toward 35% even as dedicated freight corridors shift some bulk traffic from road to rail.
