What this industry is

This is the residual, personal-services economy: barbers, beauticians, launderers, tailors, domestic workers, priests, coaches, gym trainers, wedding planners and repairers, employing about 18 million people mostly in enterprises too small to register, plus a further ~2 million in repair and unallocated manufacturing. It generated an estimated ₹8.0 lakh crore of GVA in FY26 (2.5% of national GVA), grown from ₹0.7 lakh crore in FY05 at a 12% nominal annual rate, with about 80% of value added coming from mixed income of self-employed households. Growth is driven by urban wage inflation, the shift of household spending from goods to services, and the gradual organisation of the premium urban segment by platforms (Urban Company, Cult.fit, Matrimony.com) and chains (Naturals, Lakmé Salon, Enrich). The base case projects growth to ₹12.4 lakh crore by FY30 and ₹20.5 lakh crore by FY35, the fastest-growing part of the public-services envelope, though equity-market representation remains negligible (ERR 0.02x) since religion, domestic work and most sport and unincorporated establishments sit entirely outside listed markets.
